Ethiopia in Summer

Heat spits in our faces,

rainy specks sooth

mid-afternoon for

ten minutes, replace

cloud clusters with

blue-grey balm,

coolness, smooth.

We sweat into our

sheets in the dark.

Sun rises with the

quavering Mosque

prayers that wake

the city daily.

“That’s life in Addis Abbaba!”
